Why Your Old AC Refrigerant Is Being Phased Out (And What It Means for You)
If you have an air conditioning system that's 15+ years old, you might be running on R-22 refrigerant, commonly known as "Freon." It's a solid refrigerant that worked for decades, but you've probably noticed one thing: it's getting expensive to recharge, and technicians keep mentioning it's being phased out. Here's why, and what you need to know.
The Ozone Problem
R-22 was the HVAC standard for years, but scientists discovered it was part of the problem destroying the ozone layer. When R-22 leaks into the atmosphere, chlorine atoms break down ozone molecules that protect us from harmful UV radiation. It's not an exaggeration—this was a real environmental threat.
In 1987, the EPA signed the Montreal Protocol, a global agreement to phase out ozone-depleting substances. R-22 was on that list. The U.S. set a hard deadline: R-22 production and import was completely banned on January 1, 2020.
What That Means for Your System
If your system still has R-22 in it, it still works—the refrigerant isn't suddenly bad. But here's the catch:
Refrigerant is getting scarce and expensive. With production banned, existing R-22 supplies are dwindling. A recharge that might have cost $100 a few years ago can now run $300–$600 or more, depending on how much your system needs. Some refrigerant is reclaimed and recycled, but supply is tight.
Manufacturers stopped making R-22 compatible equipment in 2010. If you need a new compressor, capacitor, or other major part for an R-22 system, you're hunting for used or recycled components—or paying premium prices.
The writing's on the wall. Eventually, R-22 will become impossible to find, and your repair costs will skyrocket.
The New Alternatives
The HVAC industry has moved to newer refrigerants that don't harm the ozone:
R-410A has been the most common replacement for the last 15+ years. It's efficient, widely available, and works well in modern systems. Most systems installed in the last decade use R-410A.
R-454B is the newest generation—even more efficient and lower global warming potential. New systems are increasingly designed around R-454B to meet tighter environmental standards.
Both of these refrigerants are fully phased in, widely available, and compatible with modern equipment and parts.
Should You Replace Your System?
This depends on your situation:
If your system is 15+ years old and you're facing a major repair, it often makes sense to replace it with a new R-410A or R-454B system. You'll get better efficiency, lower operating costs, and the peace of mind that parts and refrigerant will be available for the next 10–15 years.
If your system is still running well and only needs a recharge, you can keep it going for now. But budget for higher refrigerant costs, and start planning a replacement in the next few years.
If you have a newer system, you're already on R-410A or R-454B and have nothing to worry about.
The Florida Factor
